Il Packaging è Comunicazione
Sonia Pedrazzini, Marco Senaldi

Packaging is Communication
Sonia Pedrazzini, Marco Senaldi

Packaging is communication not so much because it speaks (or shouts) at us from the shelves, it manifests itself with all of its physical nature and seduces and convinces us. It is communication aboveall because it is capable of activating an explicit and direct relation with the user; it channels empathy and emotion, it manages to create a mental link as well as a social and historical one. The psychological effect that a pack might have on us depends not only on its graphic and structural dimension but also and perhaps aboveall from the use, evermore declared and creative, that is made of it within medial and communicative situations like that of advertising and marketing. Nowadays, to decree the success of a packaging item, something is needed that reaches beyond the packaging itself; an evocative and emotional world built ad hoc also needs to be present, the packaging item being an active and integral part of the same, a much broader system also including our own imagery, our real needs, the product contained, the producer, the brand.

This is what for example Tetra Pak has been able to do, that for promoting its packaging items has generated a highly special communicative context and through advertising and press campaign managed to set up a direct dialogue with the public, informing them to what degree its containers protect and are precious allies of quality.
Running the communicative side of packaging is no simple matter, hence we spoke to those that who do it for
a living and who know the subtle logic that moves markets and merchandise; we interviewed two big international strategic and brand design agencies: RobilantAssociati and Pentagram.
But finally, when it comes down to it, what does packaging communicate? Potentially everything: from Italian products, seen and narrated by Maria Gallo, to music, represented by some original examples of CD cases. From fear - exorcised by the “packaging antiphobia” of the Swedish designers Propeller - to books, those edited and “packed” by the talented Fabrica. From the fleeting and contemporary art and glamour of personalities such as Rob Pruitt, to the aesthetics that feature on the packaging of cult merchandise, this according to the reflections of Fulvio Carmagnola. Up to nothing, or that is up to the communication of immaterialness, analysed and recounted by the examples that Carlo Branzaglia has chosen for us.
