Emotional Pack
Sonia Pedrazzini, Marco Senaldi
Emotional Pack

One often hears talks of viral, emotional and even neuronal marketing - as if the technique of selling products had by now turned en masse to the science of the mind and the study of the psychology of the purchaser - abandoning the traditional socio-cultural approach to which it entrusted itself just a few years ago. A similar swing can arouse two reactions: on the one hand one might think that marketing has grown up and is at last using conceptually qualitative elements, on the other hand that the besieging of the consumer is beginning to dangerously resemble an imperceptible but all-pervasive brainwashing. To be true, those that have to sell something have always appealed to the emotivity of the potential purchaser, but these days it is even clearer that we prefer to buy from someone who is able to appear pleasant and congenial, who makes good use of empathy and who offers goods that, as well a offering pure functionality, strike our imagination and our desires. What has in fact changed today - as Lucas Conley sustains in his recent book OBD: Obsessive Branding Disorder - is that products, as well as being convincing for their quality, have to be able to seduce the consumer by arousing the purchaser's secret emotivity; they have to have an odour, a taste, a sound, a cladding and aboveall a personality. The result could be read negatively as a subliminal manipulation or our desires - but also positively, given that the goods are -as one might say - compelled to become "emotionally 3D", deeper and more interesting than what they were before. Logically, packaging plays a fundamental role in this complex and unusual challenge. The container in fact is not only an exterior wrapping that protects, embellishes and helps to induce purchase, but it is becoming a true and proper second skin, receptive and communicative, capable of generating sensorial and affective involvement. As the authoritative scholar Giuliana Bruno explains, in the article we publish below, when we speak of wrapping, whether we are speaking of skin, garment or dwelling, and also the packaging of a product, we are indicating something that is a limit that separates but at the same time unites, of an interface that has two sides, one facing outwards, towards the world that surrounds us, the other inwards, towards our universe of emotions and desire.
We have conceived of this issue of Impackt as a further delving into this inner world for which packaging can act as a sign and a vehicle, as can be deduced from the work of designers like Sergio Calatroni, or by the creation of new mental and sensorial experiences in the field of some spirits, or food products dedicated to wellness such as the case of Alixir. All things that the artists have understood well - as borne witness to by the work of Benjamin Sabatier, who, as well as having clear ideas on this count, to the point of speaking about a true and proper "âge de l'emballage", has decided to create DIY, a kit for making your own works of art - to close the circle of emotions and to bring creativity back to its authentic source, the unconscious of all of us.
